Is Microdermabrasion the Right Treatment for You?

Both men and women who want to soften the look of uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and large pores can choose microdermabrasion, a minimally-invasive, outpatient skin treatment. Below is more information about why this treatment may be right for you and your skin.

What Happens during Microdermabrasion?

You have a consultation with a member of our team well before the procedure. Our staff member takes your medical history and helps determine your goals and expectations. Our staff member also determines if you are a good candidate. A good candidate for this treatment is in generally good mental and physical health and does not have a skin infection that might make it difficult for them to heal from the treatment. The patient must not be a smoker and may be asked to stop taking anticoagulant medication in the weeks before the treatment.

The Session

During the session, the client reclines in a chair. A trained member of our team uses a handpiece to spray away the very top layers of skin, which are filled with dead, dry cells. As the skin cells are sprayed off, a vacuum cannula sucks them up along with any excess exfoliating material. Several materials can be used to treat the client’s skin. A session usually lasts about 30 minutes and has no downtime.

This treatment doesn’t just remove dead skin cells but stimulates the body to create fresh cells to replace them. It also stimulates the body to make more collagen. Collagen is a protein that’s laid down beneath the layers of skin and keeps it both taut and elastic.

After the Session

After a microdermabrasion session, our staff member soothes the client’s face with a moisturizer and a sunscreen. It is important that the client stay out of the sun for a few days after the session. If this isn’t practicable, they need to wear sunscreen if they go outside during the day. They should also not use acne medications on their skin for at least a day after their microdermabrasion.

Most clients have more than one microdermabrasion session for best results. Most sessions are scheduled a month or two apart. A client can also return for microdermabrasion touch-ups.
